The History of Chesterfield Market

Markets have been held in Chesterfield since Saxon times but the first legal weekly markets were held in under a charter granted by King John in the year 1204 and they have continued to function without interruption to the present day. Saturday is the longest established day; the Monday market was first held in 1923, Friday added in 1965 and the Thursday flea market in 1983.

Prior to 1900 sales of cattle and horses were held on Market Square and adjoining streets. Prior to the New Square market being set out in 1828 the area was used for the sale of sheep and pigs - hence the local name Swines Green – by which it is still known by many of the older inhabitants of the town.

Market day today comprises some 240 stalls set out on Main Square and New Square, and additional stall on the side streets.
