Minutes of the meetings and newspaper cuttings are still in the Boroughs hands, which tell the story of how the Market Hall was designed and built. The whole façade of the building was completely renovated some 20 years ago and an adjoining section sympathetic to the old design added. It has now started to weather and the whole building looks as if it had all been built in 1857. In 1981, the Market Hall was awarded second place to Covent Garden by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in its annual awards. In the same year, the Council was also awarded one of the five medals for the whole of Europe under the Europa Nostra Awards. Stalls inside and shops outside of the Market Hall are available on short or long-term leases.
